A group of Wrangellites put in a few volunteer hours alongside the SAGA and Forest Service staff at the Middle Ridge cabin last weekend helping to prepare it for occupation. The"Friends of the Tongass Cabins" (FTC) was created from concern over the potential loss of the cabin program on our Tongass National Forest. Several cabins on the Tongass we scheduled for decommissioning due to lack of use and limited funding for maintenance. Wrangell, as the gateway to the Stikine, has unrivaled access to numerous recreational cabins along the river. However, a land-accessible cabin on Wrangell Island has long been a goal for the Wrangell Ranger District and Wrangellites. Through the efforts of volunteers and a course on cabin-building using second growth materials, Wrangell should have its first such cabin on Middle Ridge by mid-August, if all goes to plan.
