Starrigavan Creek Cabin
Starrigavan Recreation Area
Sitka Ranger District
Tongass National Forest

The Tongass National Forest - Sitka Ranger District completed construction of a hand-scribed log cabin available to recreation users at Starrigavan Recreation Area. This cabin has been made possible through an incredible partnership process. Partners include University of Alaska - Southeast (Sitka), University of Alaska - Fairbanks Forest Products Project and Cooperative Extension Service, Pacific Northwest Wood Utilization Center, Sitka Conservation Society, US Coast Guard, Safari Club International (SCI), Friends of the Tongass Cabins, Southeast Alaska Guidance Association (SAGA), and the Youthbuild Program.

The cabin project is a part of the Starrigavan Valley Integrated Resource Plan. The logs were selected from the Starrigavan Valley during a forest health thinning project in October, 2007. They were taken to the University of Alaska Southeast and stored for the winter, and then peeled in April 2008. The University held a continuing education two-week workshop in May and the participants learned to hand-scribe a log cabin while erecting the shell. They were led by instructors Michael and Richard Musick. The instructors led about half of the remaining participants in the reconstruction, door and window cutting, and part of the roof, which was completed the first week of July 2008. The SAGA Program crew completed the rest of the cabin that summer. The grand opening was held during the Alaska Day festivities, October 18, 2008.
